Destination Truth Recap: Spirits of Easter Island; the Moa
EASTER ISLAND, RAPA NUI, ISLA DE PASCUA
Easter Island appears as a tiny particle of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is the most remotely inhabited island with its closest neighbors in Chile about 1200 miles away. The island has hundreds of huge statues called Moai ahu that are about 75 tons and carved from volcanic rock. These statues were scattered all over the island and are told to hold the spirits of the dead chiefs they represent. The island natives are called Rapa Nui and have reported strange feelings, voices and apparitions in the presents of these massive statues. Easter Island is only 15 miles long but over 800 of these Moai ahu are dispersed along the coast. The recent reports have been concentrated near Tongariki where the largest ceremonial alter is located. Other reports have been around the Quarry and a nearby forest.
They (1) flew 13 hours to Santiago, Chile and another four hour across the Pacific to arrive on Easter Island. They then drove (2) south to Hanga Roa O Tai, the only town on the island where the natives have lived for over hundreds of years. Rapa Nui script can be seen all over the island which is one of the last untranslated languages in the world. After a brief rap session in the jeep, they met up with a local painter who had a terrifying encounter at the altar. He saw many shadow figures moving by his tent one night and heard voices speaking the ancient Rapa Nui language. Josh asked if he felt they were ghosts and he said “yes, because there was no other explanation”. A Rapa Nui tribal leader also tells Josh that these spirits of his ancestors that guide the island. He goes on to tell Josh that they shouldn’t take the power of these spirits lightly and performed a tribal dance to guarantee their safety. Next they drive to the Quarry near the slopes of the volcano where around 400 statues are scattered about. This place is known as the “nursery” and where the Moai ahu were carved. Many of the locals’ believe that this is where their powers came from. Josh speaks with a park ranger whose terrifying experience has him staying away from the park at night. He tells Josh that he heard voices that were ordering him around and that the island will either except you or reject you. In order for them to gain acceptance they had to go see a local medicine woman who can aide them. This local healer tells Josh that he needed to drink an herbal tea made with an exotic island plant called the Matuipua. This plant is found down in the crater of the volcano where Ryder and Josh use horses (3) to get to their destination. After climbing down a steep ledge, Ryder finally located the plant and they headed back. After drinking the tea, both felt their tongues go numb. They met up with the rest of the team and made their way to the Tongariki alter.
They set up base camp near the alter, and split up into teams and headed out. Rex, Bobby and Gabe checked out the forest and Josh with the rest of Team Truth scouted the alter. The heavy rains made things difficult to investigate. Josh and his team notice a very strange light quickly flying through the air. They see it again and chase it down. They come across another statue where that glow or light flew. All of a sudden, Evan flips out and rips his shirt off. He said it felt like a hand went up his shirt. After that crazy event, they made their way to the Quarry. The area was thick with banana trees. The find a deep cave and enter to check it out. They decide to do an EVP session. When Josh asked “Is there anybody here”, they get a loud creepy moan in response. They move in deeper and hear another creepy moan. The meter goes crazy and shows movement while they hear more voices. They walk in deeper and find nothing.
Meanwhile, Rex and Bobby are checking out the forest and Rex hears someone call out his name. He asked Bobby but it wasn’t him. Later Rex sees a person standing in the darkness and they give chase. When they got to the location, no one was there.
The reviewed the video evidence and had no explanation for the strange light in the sky. The EVP sessions picked up banging, which they dismissed because of the elements. They did catch moaning twice and a voice answering Mike’s question, “hello is anybody back there?” That voice appeared to say, “No, I can’t show myself”, but it was a bit hard to make out. I did count only 3 modes of transportation on this journey, so cheers!
NEW ZEALAND, QUEENSTOWN, THE MOA
On New Zealand’s South Island is where many have reported seeing a creature they call, “Moa”. This ancient bird was thought to be extinct over 500 years ago as been recently sighted in the area. The Moa is one of the biggest flightless birds and once flourished on the South Island. Recently hunters have encountered this huge bird in the Fiordland area of the island in the thick rainforest area. They have also found nests and bonse high up in the Glacier Mountains on Mt. Cook. Both areas are uninhabited by humans and would be a great place for this massive bird to hide. The Moa is described as fast moving, stands up to 12 feet tall, covered in thick colorful feathers, completely wingless, large three toe claws, razor sharp teeth, with an aggressive demeanor and uses its large powerful neck to attack its victims.
They flew (1) to the south of the New Zealand island to Queenstown. They drove (2) to Christchurch to find the curator of the museum but had GPS problems along the way. Apparently it spoke every language but English. They found the museum and that it was devoted to 12 species of this huge bird that lived on the island. The curator showed Josh bones of the bird so he could get an idea of how massive this creature was. They left Christchurch and headed southwest about 300 miles to get deep into the Fiordland mountains. Along the way they stopped at a small town to talk with Paddy Freaney who gained national attention after claiming to come face to face with the Moa while hiking in the mountains. He tells Josh that he saw the bird, gave chase, and snapped a picture. Because he was running, the photo turned out fuzzy. They continued to Queenstown, known as the adventure capital of the world. Josh, Evan and Bobby took a helicopter (3) to get to the top of the glacier to look around for any signs of the bird. They hiked (4) around, checking out small caves where at one point Josh slide down the side of the glacier. Evan was able to stop everyone from sliding and they continued to check out the area. They took the helicopter back and drove on to the town of Te Anau with over 20 miles of unoccupied countryside ahead of them. They split up into two groups, one would take a seaplane (5) and the other used a boat (6). The join forces and walked (7) about two hours to the area where base camp was set up.
They split up in groups to sweep the perimeter. Josh and Ryder walk through the thick forest and steep inclines. Josh catches something large on the flir so they chase it down. While giving chase, Josh slips off the side and appears to be okay. They find bones and bag them for evidence. The ground becomes very spongy with moss all over the place. They hear a strange bird sound and footsteps in the darkness. Meanwhile Rex and Bobby hear loud noises like coming from a large bird. Ryder finds a large feather, so they bag it and Josh finds a large footprint. Mike also finds a couple more large bird-like prints. Bobby heads towards them with the casting equipment and they took molds of the prints.
They were able to match the strange bird calls to a rare species of bird living on the island. Josh then takes the bones to Dr. Kimball Garrett an ornithologist, who tells them the bones were from a mammal. The footprints could be from a large bird but not the Moa. I did count 7 different changes in transportation for this investigation, so drink up.
Another fantastic season is over and I enjoyed it as always!

Destination Truth Recap: Ghosts of Petra; the Lizard Man
PETRA, JORDAN, TREASURY TOMB
Petra is a beautifully carved place and told to be perilously haunted. More than 2500 years ago, these deep carvings were etched into the mountainside by the Nabateans. The Nabateans were very skilled merchants and controlled the trade routes throughout Arabia. Petra has been crowned one of the Seven Wonders of the World and is Jordan’s greatest attraction. It’s at night, when the crowds have gone, when the guards have reported hearing whispering and seeing mysterious shadows moving along the walls. The locals believe it is the spirit of Djinn, Arabic for ghost, which is responsible for the paranormal activity at night. They say these Djinn live in the burial chambers and dark recessed areas around Petra. Team Truth was the first to gain total access to investigate these mysterious happenings.
They flew 18 hours to Amman, which is the capital city of Jordan. For 10,000 years, Amman has been inhabited which makes it one of the oldest cities in the world. After heading to the local market, and singing the vegetable songs, Josh pick up some things to help defend him against the evil spirits, an eye medallion and eye drops. As they head out along the highway, they notice several vehicles with armed men in them. Josh meets up with Lana Nasser, a cultural expert, who tells him that Djinns have been in old homes and ruins. They have been seen and felt amongst the villagers. They are close to the Bedewing and stay connected to the ground to help them spiritually. They leave Amman and head south to Wadi Rum looking for Bedewings. Driving through the desert, they finally find a group and using camels, they head to the camp. They sat by the fire hearing stories about Petra where some have seen shadow figures and heard their names called. In the morning they hopped back on their jeep to find more people and ask about their experiences. They say that Petra at night is very scary. They see huge shadows, heard their name called, lots of talking, and hear sword fighting. They have to walk along the Siq, a mile long canyon that hides the access to the city. They are just amazed by all the massive buildings and carvings that continue very high up on the buildings.
After setting up base camp, they break up into two groups to explore the place. They place has many loose stones, so they have to watch where they step. Evan sees an orb fly by his camera while shooting one of the ruins. While in one of the ruins, Josh and Ryder experience a rock being thrown at them and the sound of metal clanking. While Rex sets up a trap camera in that area, Josh and Ryder head off to the treasure. There are sheer cliffs on the side of the worn out stairs on the walk to the treasure, where most of the activity has been reported. Inside is one large chamber with three small ones. They decide to conduct an EVP session, and they hear chanting and moaning. Josh asked if anyone was there and there was a clear “yes” response. Their equipment starts to show movement so they decided to regroup at base camp and head out again. Josh is with Bobby, Mike and Evan, where the trail comes to an end and they repel down to the place below, of course. Back at base camp, they notice what looked like a person sitting in one of the alcoves. Ryder checks it out but doesn’t see anyone. She sits for awhile alone but hears a coyote and decides to leave. Meanwhile, Josh and gang hit the bottom and come across a dog.
After reviewing the evidence, he enlists the aid of Jason and Grant to get their opinions of what they found. They thought the rock throwing was a negative entity and the metal sound could be a residual type noise. They disregarded the orb as a bug. The other voices and sounds caught on audio they felt was great evidence of the place being haunted.
SOUTH CAROLINA, THE LIZARD MAN
Deep in the south in Bishopville, South Carolina, there is a creature on the loose and terrorizing their town. In 1988 near Scape Ore Swamp, a young man encountered a creature that he described as half man and half lizard. After charging at his car, it disappeared in the darkness. Many more sightings and encounters have been reported after 20 years of nothing. A car was attacked and lots of sightings along the swamp were reported being done by this lizard man. The lizard man is said the slither along the swamp but will stand upright when it attacks. It is also described as half man, have reptile, and stands about 7 feet tall, very strong jaw, scaly skin, peering red eyes and a three fingered claw-like footprint.
They flew six hours to Columbia, South Carolina and picked up the Team Truth vehicle. From there, they drove 40 miles to the tiny town of Bishopville. The population of Bishopville is 6,300 residences, and they have Lizard Man items everywhere. He gathered the residence together for a town hall meeting to get their thoughts of the creature. Josh talked with an ex-sheriff who showed him footprints which Josh took photos of them. He then met with Dixie, whose car was attacked by the mysterious creature and looked like it took a bit out of her car. Josh took a flight up with Frank, so he could mark the area of the most sightings with GPS. He quickly realized that Frank was the craziest s.o.b. in the county. The meeting was held at the Button Museum, by the Button King. Many from the town showed up and described the creature as massive, and warned of the snakes and alligators that are also in the swamp. After a night of entertainment, they used ATV’s and drove along the swamp and found the place to set up base camp.
After base camp was set up, they headed out in two separate groups to do perimeter sweeps. Josh and Ryder come across a deer stand and Josh climbs it with the flir and gets a hit. It was small, looked like it was far away and moving. One of the perimeter alarms went off and Josh went to check it out. Along the way they hear grunting noises and catch an animal on the flir. At the transmitter for the fence, they hear noises, so Josh pulls out his machete and they investigate. They hear some very loud growling and back off. Back at base camp, they regroup and Rex adds a trap camera where Josh and gang heard the growling. He hears it too along with other noises and chases it down but loses whatever it was. Meanwhile, Josh and gang are walking through the muddy swamp where Evan sees a pair of eyes on his camera. They take case but realize that it was a pack of coyotes.
Back in Los Angeles, Josh takes the evidence to Mike Dee. He says that according to the pictures, the car looks like something other than a reptile could have done the damage because lizards have straight teeth, not sharp. As for the footprints, they were 100% identical coming to the conclusion that they were faked. Josh comes to the conclusion that the Lizard Man is nothing but a harmless hoax.

Destination Truth Recap: Haunted Mining Town, the Taniwha
CHILE, LA NORIA AND HUMBERSTONE
La Noria and Humberstone, are reported as being haunted abandoned mining towns in Chile. Both these towns flourished during the 19th century during the mining boom where the conditions were terrible in and the treatment was bordering on slavery. Many workers including young children suffered horrible deaths. Locals near both these towns are claiming that they are haunted. Witnesses reported seeing the dead rise from their graves in the local cemetery at La Noria. Photos taken at Humberstone have revealed ghostly images of dead miners. Allison Scagliotti from Warehouse 13 joined Team Truth on this investigation.
They flew 10 hours to the city of Iquique, Chile, where they met up with Allison. Josh gives her the nickname “Scags” and she joins him in tasting some on the local cuisine. After enjoying a ritual dance with the locals, they find Hernan Baca, a local theater manager, who has experienced some of the activity in both towns many times. He tells Josh that when the sun goes down, the ghost come out of the graves and walk around. Another man tells him that the energy from all that suffered there, are still hanging around. Voices, children playing and other strange sounds could be heard coming from the abandoned towns. To get an idea where the towns’ exact locations are, they take to the skies in gliders. Josh spots the walls of the ruins and marks it with GPS.
They get to the perimeter of La Noria, where the buildings are just in ruins, and set up base camp. Josh, Mike, Evan and Allison checked out the north side of town, while the rest of Team Truth investigated the south side. They find photos, newspaper articles, a child’s shoe and where Josh sees something like a person on the thermal camera. They stumble across the cemetery and find open graves everywhere. They could still see the clothes and hair on the bones, and one appeared to be screaming. Josh calls for Ryder and her team to join them at the cemetery where they do a 30 minute isolation sessions. Allison was a bit hesitant and heard a male voice behind her. Ryder sees someone walking towards her but it wasn’t anyone from Team Truth. Evan noticed that she saw an apparition near an open grave. They left a camera at the cemetery and headed off the investigate Humberstone. There is lots of paranormal activity in this town as well. This town’s buildings are preserved by the government and in much better condition. They take many still photos in the buildings to see if any ghosts show up in them. Bobby, Gabe and Rex find an open pit in one building, so Rex decides to get in it and do an EVP session. He feels chills and hears loud noises above him in the barn. He leaves the hole pretty shaken. Josh, Allison, Ryder, Mike and Evan find the abandoned school. The girls go in one area, while Mike and Josh sit in another class room. Josh is shining the thermal camera all around while Mike experiences seeing a dim light coming from the door across the hall. Josh shines the thermal camera in that direction just in time to catch what looked like someone walking across the door. He jumped up and went after whatever it was. He said it looked like someone was looking in the camera.
In Los Angeles they analyzed the photos which had strange mist show up on many of the pictures, but could say what it was. They checked out the thermal evidence and it looked like someone walked by the window and you can see what looks like an arm. Next they concentrated on the EVP’s. When Rex was in the hole, he caught what sounded like “no” and Josh’s solo EVP session, he caught what sounded like “I am”. What a couple of creepy little towns they ended up being.
ROTORUA, NEW ZEALAND, TANIWHA
Most of the sightings of an aquatic creature, known as the Taniwha, is centered around the town of Rotorua. Deep in the northern section of New Zealand the Taniwha is described as an eel like creature, about 10 feet in length, body milky white, powerful jaw with many sharp teeth and said to protect bodies of water around the north island hiding in dark caves and crevices. The creature is known to swim openly at night, attacking anyone or anything that passes its path.
Team Truth flew 13 hours to Auckland, New Zealand which is one of the largest cities in the country. Again dancing with the locals, they next drove many hours south to arrive at Rotorua. This city is built inside a volcanic caldera, where sulfate smelling ponds and geysers rise amongst the beautiful landscape. Josh met up with a local man to find out more about this elusive creature. He tells Josh that the Taniwha is respected by the older residence but is to be feared. Since there were many sightings along the river, they decided to take a raft to scan it. At one point the rapids got very strong, and Ryder fell out the raft. They were able to quickly retrieve her and press on. They met up with some local experts on the creature, who decided that Josh needed to be tattooed on his face to be accepted by the group. The tribal leader and others also had seen the Taniwha in the water and nearby caves.
At the lake, they acquired two boats to survey the lake and then set up base camp. While getting ready to head out, Vanessa spots something big in the water. Gabe and Josh dove underwater but the vegetation was so thick that is was hard to see anything. Vanessa and Ryder saw something in the water on one of the cameras and called for Josh to check it out. He did see something large go pass him but had trouble identifying it. They decided to take out the two boats to see if anything emerges at the surface. Josh caught something huge on the thermal, so they chased after it. They see it again, turn off the motor and sat waiting for it to surface again. All of a sudden, they were attacked by bugs and hurried to get away. The bugs were everywhere! Meanwhile, Rex and Bobby find the cave that the locals have talked about. Rex and Evan get in the water but the elements surrounding them has the boys getting back in the boat. They head back to base camp and Josh decides to check out the cave. They drop an aqua cam in the water but had no further encounters.
In Los Angeles, Josh took his findings to Mike Schaadt, a marine biologist, to get his expert opinion. From the thermal evidence and video, Mike felt that they caught an eel. In that area, there is a freshwater eel that can grow up to six feet tall and could be mistaken for the Taniwha.
